Some of the old nail marks can be seen on the flats of the posts, adding to the character.

The captive ring was added. while I was turning the post I thought it would add a special touch, and if it was not liked, I could always remove it. It was loved however, so there it stayed.

The spindles were turned from new seasoned oak, to match the newel posts.
