Two old 6" oak gate posts were purchased from a reclaim yard, complete with nails hanging out.

Also an old section of handrail was bought, along with a couple of carved roses which I ended up using on top of the posts to finish them off.

The taller post in the picture is to be sawn in half to go against the wall. The shorter post will be doweled into the bottom section already fitted.
